The short answer

A chastity cage is a small device worn over the penis that stops an erection from growing and blocks touching. It is usually held in place by a ring around the base and secured with a lock, so it cannot come off without a key or a combination.

People wear one for different reasons: for pleasure, for control, for a partner's enjoyment, or as a personal challenge such as Locktober. Whatever the reason, the device works the same way, and the same few things decide whether it is comfortable.

How a cage works

There are two parts that matter. The shell holds the penis in a downward or forward position. The ring sits behind the testicles. A lock or a clip joins the two, so the cage stays on until somebody with the key or the combination takes it off.

The shell has slots or a channel at the end, so you can pass water and keep clean while it is on. That is why most cages can be worn for longer than an evening, once the fit is right.

The main types

Cages with a separate ring are the most common design. The ring size and the cage length can be changed on their own, which makes it much easier to get the fit right, and is why most people start with one.

Cages with a built-in ring are simpler, with fewer parts to line up, but the fit is harder to adjust: if the ring is wrong, the whole device is.

Belt-style and tube devices wrap around the hips or sit close to the body. They are less common, and are often worn for different reasons from a cage.

Materials

Plastic and resin cages are light, cheap and comfortable for long wear. They are a good choice for a first cage, because a wrong size costs less to put right and the material is kinder to skin while you learn.

Silicone is soft and flexible, and usually less secure. Stainless steel is heavier and very secure, and is often chosen by people who already know their size.

Before you wear one

This guide is general information, not medical advice. Fit matters more than anything: too tight is unsafe, and too loose means it slips off. Measure before you buy, and expect to change size once or twice. That is normal, not a mistake.

Keep it clean: wash the device and yourself daily, and dry properly. Start with short sessions and build up from hours to days.

Take it off at the first sign of trouble. Pain, numbness, a change in colour, swelling, broken skin or a rash are all reasons to unlock straight away, whatever was planned. If it does not settle once the cage is off, see a doctor or call NHS 111.

Common questions

Is it safe? For most healthy people, a well-fitted cage worn for sensible stretches and kept clean is low risk. Take it off at the first sign of pain, numbness or skin damage.

How long can you wear one? There is no single answer. Beginners usually start with a few hours, then days. Long runs should only follow a good fit and a clean routine.

Can you sleep in one? Yes, though erections at night are the part beginners find hardest. A good fit and a slightly longer shell are more comfortable. Can you pass water with one on? Yes: the channel or slot at the end is there for exactly that.

A cage is two parts, a ring and a shell, and fit decides almost everything else. Start short, keep it clean, and take it off the moment something is wrong.
